Trails and Turquoise waters at Lake Bled

Lake Bled was one of the places we’d been most excited about before the trip. We both love being outdoors, so we just knew it would be exactly our kind of place, and it didn’t disappoint.

We arrived at our cosy Airbnb, which felt like such a treat after constant travelling. Having our own space again was lovely. After a quick stop at the shops for trail snacks and dinner bits, we couldn’t wait any longer! The Airbnb was only a two-minute walk from the Lake, so we headed straight down.

Even with the mist and light rain, we were completely in awe. It was one of those views that just stops you in your track… calm, dramatic, and ridiculously beautiful. A lovely lady called Sunny even took a photo of us, capturing that first moment perfectly.

After sitting on a bus for hours, we had restless legs, so we decided to run the loop around the lake. At 6km, it was the perfect distance. Running alongside that scenery felt unreal. The water, the mountains, the stillness, it was one of those runs you don’t want to end. Pure tranquility!

That evening, we cooked pasta back at the apartment (a nice change from eating out) and planned our hike for the next day.

The following morning, we set off towards Vintgar Gorge, about a 5km walk from Bled. The journey there alone was stunning…mountain views, peaceful trails, and glimpses of Triglav in the distance. Slovenia just kept delivering.

Once we arrived and entered the gorge (helmets on and ready), we followed the 1.4km wooden walkway through one of the most beautiful natural spots we’ve ever seen. Crystal-clear turquoise water rushed beneath us, winding through the rocks, with every turn somehow more impressive than the last. The waterfall at the end was the perfect finale.

After taking it all in (and enjoying a bit of sunshine!), we followed the King of Triglav Trail back towards Bled. It was definitely a hilly but completely worth it. At one point, the trail opened up onto a road with some of the best views we’ve ever seen. We stopped for lunch there, simple crisp butty which felt so perfect in that moment.

As we made our way back towards the lake, the weather had cleared, and seeing Bled in the sunshine was something else entirely. The water turned this incredible vibrant turquoise, sparkling in the light. It felt like a different place.

We weren’t done yet though. We wanted that iconic viewpoint, so we pushed on up to Mala Osojnica. Short but very steep, and definitely a challenge after everything we’d already done. But the view at the top? Unreal. One of those “wow, this is why we came” moments.

By the time we made it back down, we’d covered about 14km and were more than ready for a break. Naturally, we rewarded ourselves with the famous Bled cream cake! Layers of cream, custard, and pastry. Exactly what we needed after a full day on the trails.

We finished the walk back to our apartment, clocking up around 18km in total. Honestly, one of the best days of the trip! Completely in our element.

The next morning, we woke up well-rested and buzzing for our next activity: ziplining.

We got kitted out with harnesses and headed up into the hills for what turned out to be Europe’s longest zipline experience. 7 ziplines covering 4km in total. The whole tour lasted about 2.5 hours, with short hikes between each line. The views were insane! Endless forests, lakes, and mountain peaks stretching as far as we could see, all under bright blue skies.

Ziplining felt so freeing. Equal parts thrilling and peaceful and we had so much fun. Highlight (or lowlight): I managed to stop myself too early on one line and got stuck mid-air…cue a slightly embarrassing rescue mission. We laughed about it the whole way down.

After the tour, it was time to say goodbye to Bled as we headed back to Ljubljana for our overnight bus to Budapest.

We absolutely loved our time here, every moment felt special! It’s one of those places that just sticks with you. We both agreed: we’ll definitely be back. There’s so much more to explore.
